Construction Update - July 11, 1999
It was just one year and a half ago that the congregation
gave the Session overwhelming approval to proceed with
a building program. Well, we are finally under way with
the first stages of our building project and it's exciting.
We have moved 12 trees that were going to be in the
way of the construction and asbestos abatement has begun.
Asbestos is being removed from items in the rooms below
the sanctuary as well as the floor tile in Stewart hall.
The asbestos that will be removed will be shipped to
a toxic waste landfill somewhere in the U.S. We will
be told where that landfill is because we will own that
asbestos for eternity. The EPA action.
Stewart Hall will be off limits once construction begins; and
in order to continue to provide space for all of our programs,
three portable classrooms will be placed outside of the Parish
House.
The building committee is very pleased with the final design
of the building. Our architects Williams Associates have done
a great job. The project is out for bids, and we will receive
them late this month. After Session's final approval, it is possible
that the ground breaking could occur as early as mid August with
completion in June or July next year.
The cost of the project will not be finalized until
the bids are received.
The manse will come down. There was a church family
that looked at the possibility of relocating the building
but it did not work out.
To date we have received fewer than 400 pledges totaling
$4,137,000. The collection rate, however, is 92% of
funds pledged, which is a concern if the trend continues.
The Building Campaign Committee is planning a follow
to the Building for Tomorrow Capital Campaign to contact
those who haven't had the opportunity to pledge to this
important project.
The Session will be spending time developing new uses
for our new facility --to further extend the mission
of our church in the community. We have heard Doug talk
about the importance of mission--we are going to act
on it.
This indeed is an exciting time for our church family--doing
the Lord's work in a big way.

project as well as the graphic of the Celebration Garden
and additional information about it are online, no longer
as church goals, but now part of our church history.
