Doug Baker Presentation - May 2, 2004

Doug Baker, one of the missionaries supported by First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton, gave a presentation on Sunday evening, May 2, 2004, in the Ministry Center to adults and to teens from Westminster Fellowship.

Doug has been a missionary in Northern Ireland for 25 years and discussed his peacemaking and reconciliation ministry there, sharing stories and the history of that part of the world.

Doug also serves as program coordinator for the PC(USA)'s Young Adult Volunteer program in Northern Ireland. During its ten years of existence, the YAV program in Northern Ireland has had 49 volunteers from the United States serve in 16 different congregations or projects.

Young Adult Volunteers serve in communities of need at sites both in the United States and internationally. In Northern Ireland their roles include work with at-risk young people through youth clubs, drop-in centers, and tutoring programs, work with women’s and senior citizen’s groups, and assisting congregations to develop youth fellowship and other ministries. The volunteers meet regularly for prayer, Bible study, and reflection.

Doug discussed opportunities available throughout the world for Young Adult Volunteers. Young adults (19 to 30 years of age) volunteer for one year of service.

Additional information about the YAV can be found on the Presbyterian Church USA website at http://www.pcusa.org/msr/youngadult.htm.

Our thanks to Phil Slocum for the photos!
