Kirkin' o' the Tartans
January 27, 2008

We celebrated the Scottish heritage of the Presbyterian Church through a wonderful service of bagpipes and drums, tartans, beadles, Scottish liturgy, and traditions of the old Scottish Kirk at our church's first Kirkin' o' the Tartans services at 8:40 and 11:00 a.m. worship services on Sunday, January 27, 2008.

Our 2007 annual congregational meeting with a “State of the Church” address by Dr. Paul J. Kirbas was held between the worship services.

The State of the Church presentation can be downloaded as an audio file in mp3 format or as a video file in mov format.  The video format includes the slides from the powerpoint presentation and is about 75 MB in size, while the audio format is only about 5 MB in size (a much faster download). Right click either link to save the target on your own computer.

Participants gathered in the Narthex waiting for the worship service to begin.  Our Tartan Carriers were Jennifer Kirbas, Tom and Alex Boynton, Jerry O'Neil, Peggy O'Neil, Jean Goris, Ed Tweedie, Bob Young, Agnes Kenton, Carol Powell, Bruce Callahan, Phyllis Martillaro, Sandy and Harold Crittenden, Beth and Paul Burgess, Doug Boyd, Mary Kinsey, Laura, Tom, and Alex Boynton, and Kim and Hillary Van Oss.  We especially want to thank Ruth Lundy for getting the 14 Tartan Flags ordered and prepared for our services.

Beadle Peter Wilkie
The two Covenanter Guards, portrayed by Bradley Kirbas and Scott Fleming, represent the guards who were often stationed nearby when Scottish ministers held services on the moors during the dangerous days of Scottish religious rebellion.  The Bible of the Kirk was a treasured possession; and a special lay officer known as the Beadle was in charge of its protection, bringing it into the Kirk for worship and removing it for safekeeping afterwards.  Beadle Peter Wilkie reverently carries the Bible as the worshipers stand in respect for the Holy Book.
