Moses Hogan Program - September 7, 2002

Moses Hogan, one of America's most gifted pianists, conductors, and arrangers, presented a program at First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton on Saturday, September 7, 2002, attended by about 90 people from the First Presbyterian Churches of Wheaton and Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and various other music professionals, coordinated by Jean Spyksma. This all-day choir retreat included a continental breakfast in the church rotunda, a box lunch in Stewart Hall, and concluded with a catered picnic at the Spyksmas' home.

On Tuesday, February 11, 2003, Moses Hogan died at St. Elizabeth's Nursing Home, Harvey, Louisiana. He had suffered a massive stroke on October 14, 2002, and a brain tumor was found. The prayers and support received were a great source of strength for Moses and his family and friends. If you would like to send his mother, Gloria, a care card or note, please drop it in the offering plate or in the church office, and we’ll forward it. You may also send Care Cards from our website anytime - just click on care card, type in the information, and then click on send.

In the world of 20th and 21st century choral arrangers, the name of Moses Hogan belongs right at the top of the list. Moses George Hogan, born in New Orleans, Louisiana, was a graduate of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) and Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio. He also studied at New York’s Juilliard School of Music and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He had over 70 published works, and his arrangements have become staples in the repertoires of numerous choirs worldwide.

His contemporary choral settings of spirituals and other works have been praised by musicians and musical organizations across America. Audiences have responded with standing ovations upon hearing these unique and sensitive arrangements.

Moses Hogan also joined us in worship on Sunday morning, September 8, conducting our choir in his arrangements of "This Little Light of Mine," "Good News, The Chariot's Comin'," "Steal Away," "Walk Together, Children," and "Abide with Me."

Additional information about Moses Hogan, the Moses Hogan Singers, his recordings, and his arrangements is available on his website at http://www.moseshogan.com.
