Cathedral Choir Concert
October 20, 2006
On Friday evening, October 20, 2006, members and guests
had the opportunity to enjoy a concert by the Norwich Cathedral
Choir of England held in the Sanctuary of First Presbyterian
Church. This English choir was joined by the Wheaton Warrenville
South High School Choir.
The Cathedral Choir is composed of eighteen boys (aged 8-13)
and twelve men, six of whom are choral scholars. All of the boys
attend Norwich School, which is situated in the Cathedral Close
in Norwich, Norfolk, England. Auditions are usually held each
year in February for boys aged 7-9. Boys must pass a singing
audition plus the school entrance exam to enter the choir, which
sings regularly at six choral services a week during term and
also at many of the special services held in the Cathedral. |

A choir has sung at the daily services in
the Norwich Cathedral for over 900 years. Monks sang for the
first 500 years; and the tradition continues to the present time
with choristers, layclerks, and choral scholars.

| St. Benedict was the father of the monastic order, the Benedictines,
who founded Norwich Cathedral Priory in 1096. Although
updates have been made to the building, especially during the
14th and 15th centuries, the ground plan is almost unchanged
from the Romanesque original. |
