Scout Sunday was celebrated at First Presbyterian Church on February 14, 2010. This year marks the 100th anniversary of scouting in the United States. The Boy Scouts of America was founded by Mr. William D. Boyce and a group of businessmen, educators, and political leaders on February 8, 1910. Our celebration of Scout Sunday was moved from the national date of February 7 because of our Kirkin' o' the Tartans celebrations that week.
As members of First Presbyterian Church, we have sponsored Boy Scout Troop 23 since 1955 and Cub Scout Pack 63 since 1943. Our church recognizes and honors all our Scouts: Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Explorers.
Each week the boys and adult leaders in Pack 63 and Troop 23 gather at the church to learn Scout skills, work on community service, requirements for ranks, and just have fun together. Pack 63 has about 37 Cub Scouts (boys in grades 1-5) and 17 Registered Leaders. Troop 23 has about 56 Boy Scouts (boys ages 11-17) and 45 Registered Adult Leaders. Boy Scout aims include participating in citizenship, growth in moral strength and character, and development in physical, mental, and emotional fitness. These aims are embedded in programs that emphasize planning, preparation, responsibility, and teamwork such as planning the weekly meetings, outdoor activities such as camping, biking, hiking, canoe/kayak trips, swimming, and orienteering.
Additional information on Cub Scout Pack 63 is available on their website at http://www.scoutpack63.org, and further information on Boy Scout Troop 23 is online at http://www.troop23wheaton.org.
