Additional information on
Cub Scout Pack 63 is available on their website at
http://www.scoutpack63.org,
and further information on Boy Scout
Troop 23 is online at http://www.troop23wheaton.org.
Currently Pack
63 has 19 Cub Scouts (Boys in grades 1-5) and 8 Registered
Leaders. Troop 23 has 58 Boy Scouts (Boys ages 11-17)
and 50 Registered Adult Leaders.
Each week the boys and adult leaders gather at the
church to learn Scout skills, work on community service,
requirements for ranks, and just have fun together.
Boy Scout aims include participating in citizenship,
growth in moral strength and character, and development
in physical, mental, and emotional fitness. These
aims are embedded in programs that emphasize planning,
preparation, responsibility, and teamwork such as
planning the weekly meetings, outdoor activities such
as camping, biking, hiking, canoe/kayak trips, swimming,
and orienteering.
Troop 23 is a boy-run organization. Adults are there
to provide support, but the boys have the real decision-making
power. They plan and run Troop meetings, select
troop outings and campouts, plan advancement opportunities,
which help the Scouts along their trail to Eagle, research,
and pick High-Adventure trips. This experience offers
a unique opportunity to learn practical leadership
and team-building skills.
Troop 23 and Pack 63 are donating an AED (Automatic
External Defibrillator) to First Presbyterian, and
the presentation will be made soon.
Many young
men have passed through the Troop over the years since
1955, and among all those young men 145 of them have
attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Many move on;
some stay close and pass on their knowledge. The
Troop 23 Scoutmaster is Frank E. "Jeff" Jeffers,
10th Eagle Scout in the Troop; and the Committee Chair
is Michael Meyer, 45th Eagle Scout in Troop 23.
