Kirkin' o' the Tartans
February 7, 2010

Our third annual Kirkin' o' the Tartans worship services at 8:40 and 11:00 a.m. were a celebration of the Scottish heritage of the Presbyterian Church through a wonderful service of bagpipes and drums, tartans, beadles, Scottish liturgy, and traditions of the old Scottish Kirk.
Kirkin' o' the Tartans

Our Covenanter Guards entered from the back of the church, followed by our Beadle, Peter Wilkie, our Clergy, our bagpipers and drummers, and all the members who participated by carrying Tartan flags, who had begun by entering from both sides at the front of the church and moving to the back.

This service, begun in the U.S. in 1941 by Pastor Peter Marshall in the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC, reminds us of the Scottish heritage of the Presbyterian Church.  According to legend, Scottish worshippers who were forbidden to wear their clan tartans by the Proscription Act of 1746, would conceal small patches of their tartans and bring them when they went to worship at their church, or Kirk.

Dr. Paul Kirbas
Dr. Paul Kirbas read the scripture 1 Corinthians 12:1-12 from the center aisle with Beadle Peter Wilkie holding the Bible. The sermon by Paul Kirbas was "A Time To Tear and a Time To Sew."
Humble Singers Our Humble Singers sang "Instrument of Peace prior to the entrance of our Tartan flags, bagpipers, and drummers.
Everyone stood and sang "Amazing Grace"
Near the end of the service, Paul Kirbas led the congregation in a Blessing of the Tartans.  Everyone then stood and together sang the five verses of "Amazing Grace" accompanied by the bagpipes and drums.  This was followed by the Recession.

No classes were held during our usual education hour between the 8:40 and 11:00 a.m. services on Sunday, February 7, 2010.  Instead there was a time of Scottish Fellowship in the Ministry Center, including refreshments and entertainment provided by the Thistle & Heather Highland Dancers of Chicagoland.
