The Session is the governing body of our church. Elders chosen by the congregation,
together with the ministers of Word and Sacrament, provide for worship and are responsible
for the leadership, government, and discipline of our body of believers. The
Session is charged with the duty of strengthening and nurturing the faith and life
of the congregation as well as overseeing the operation and finances of this church.
According to the Book of Order: "Elders should be persons of faith, dedication,
and good judgment. Their manner of life should be a demonstration of the Christian
gospel, both within the church and in the world."
Elders should ...
- Be familiar with or at least open to the current vision and direction of the
church (which includes a commitment to relational ministry and group process, as
well as blended worship)
- Be comfortable with leadership (making tough decisions, speaking up at key meetings,
voicing the position of the church, etc.)
- Have spiritual depth or a spiritual orientation (the Book of Order describes
elders as people who
"cultivate their ability to teach the Bible")
- Have demonstrated through their participation and giving habits their solid support
for the life and ministry of this church
Elders should not be ...
- People who are rewarded for years of participation in the life of the church
- People whom we hope to win back from inactivity to a higher level of activity
within the life of the church
- People who represent a particular constituency within the congregation (such
as "older" people,
"conservative" people, "baby boomers," or any other recognizable faction within the
church)
Time Commitment:
- Three-year term
- Two meetings per month
- Two retreats per year
- Additional committee/time involvements as the Spirit leads
